Do you know how powerful 3D printing is today?

Have you heard?ITAMCO has teamed up with purdue university to develop a new runway pad for the U.S. air force through 3D printing.

Most branches of the military now rely on 3D printing, which can meet a variety of needs.Because military personnel must always be ready, sustainability and portability are high on the list.Aircraft may not always be able to land at designated airports in combat, so adding temporary airfields is necessary, and quickly laying runway MATS is important.

3D printing

For the air force, expeditionary airfields (EA) built during temporary missions require runway pads (usually made of aluminum). However, these portable pads must meet air force requirements and must include the following features:

  1. quick installation procedures
  2. Easy storage
  3. Durability
  4. Able to withstand the impact of brake hook

Currently, ITAMCO engineers are working with purdue university researchers to create a 3d-printed surface, an improvement over the am-2 aluminum wood pad that has been used since the Vietnam era.Pablo Zavattieri, a purdue university professor at the Lyles school of civil engineering, is working closely with Scott Hartford, project manager at ITAMCO, to further develop the seamless upper and lower surfaces. The two groups are achieving this goal through new technical solutions that rely on the geometry of the PXCM (phase change cell matrix).

3D printing

Both ITAMCO and Zavattieri see potential military advantages for PXCM and plate or “rolling technology” because it can handle loads and shear stresses caused by repeated expeditionary flight operations.Because they absorb pressure from the environment, deform accordingly, and return to their original shape. The “self-healing” material is not only very functional, but also has a long life, weighing about 3.5 pounds per square foot, and can be installed manually for longer service life. These 3D printed pads support 5,000 landing and take-off operations in 60 days.

Currently, 3D printing plays an important role in the prototype design and manufacturing of military and civilian aircraft, spacecraft and other components, from 3d-printed door bolts to brackets for military aircraft, and materials specially used for building rocket parts, strong, lightweight parts.Kaierwo is a custom 3D printing service factory in China, since 2002,It is normally 30% less than the US/European prices Delivery within 2 days,You can get products 30% cheaper than US/EU, Contact us Now!
