This section originated from the strike of workers in Chicago, USA. On May 1, 1886, more than 210,000 workers in Chicago held a general strike to fight for an eight-hour work system. This decision was immediately and positively responded to by workers from all over the world.
In July 1889, the Second International, led by Engels, held a congress in Paris. The meeting passed a resolution stipulating that international workers marched on May 1, 1890 and decided to set the day of May 1 as International Labor Day. The Central People’s Government Administration Office decided in December 1949 to define May 1 as Labor Day. After 1989, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China basically commended a national model worker and advanced workers every five years, and commended about 3,000 people each time.
